Metacognition and Home Learning Training

Information from the Kingsbridge Research School and the Education Endowment Foundation for teachers to learn how to adjust practice to help students learn remotely.
Metacognition & HOME LEARNING
Overview:
How can we adjust our practice to help students learn remotely?
  • Where does this advice come from?
  • What do we mean by ‘metacognitive strategies’?
  • Why are they particularly important now?
  • What is the Education Endowment Foundation’s planning framework?
  • What might this look like in practice?
  • How do I implement this framework remotely?
Presentation: Home Learning and Metacognition

HOME LEARNING APPROACHES: PLANNING FRAMEWORK
Overview:
The most effective learners self-regulate and organise their approach to learning.
They are aware of their strengths and weaknesses and have well developed metacognitive strategies that help them to learn.
Metacognitive strategies can be taught, and are particularly powerful when they are subject specific.
Metacognitive strategies are particularly important for your pupils if you cannot be with them in the classroom; along with a consideration of how we learn and how we remember what we have learned.

This framework is for a learning sequence, and is unlikely to take place within a single session.

The Planning Framework focuses on five key approaches:
  1. Activate
  2. Explain
  3. Practise
  4. Reflect
  5. Review

Reflecting on Remote Teaching

Best evidence on supporting students to learn remotely: reflecting on remote teaching.

"We must accept that home school isn’t school, and some children will find it much harder to learn at home than others.
If we follow some key principles for teaching and learning, using these as we adapt to our ‘new normal,’ we can be more hopeful that the work we set can support them more effectively.
"
Alex Quigley Education Endowment Foundation

As schools plan to reintegrate pupils back into the classroom, as well as continuing to provide remote learning, this webinar explores the best evidence on supporting pupils to learn remotely. One of the key findings from the EEF's very recent rapid evidence assessment is that school closures are likely to reverse progress made to close the gap in the last decade since 2011. It also states that supporting effective remote learning will mitigate the extent to which the gap widens.

With the future looking uncertain, but likely to involve a mix of remote and classroom learning, Steve Smith, Director of HISP Research School, reflects on and explores the lessons learned from teaching live online lessons.

Resources and Information from Sport England

The Association for Physical Education has developed a support document entitled:
‘Covid-19: Interpreting the Government Guidance in a PESSPA (Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity [education based] workforce) context.'

“This guidance has been thoroughly researched and is based on factual and scientific evidence in order to support the workforce to make informed decisions. We know that the pandemic guidance is changing regularly and we will continue to update you if anything changes. What we know is that each educational setting is unique and as professionals you will know the context in which you work and your C&YP, better than anyone.”
Sue Wilkinson MBE, CEO of Association for Physical Education

How to Produce High Quality Webinars for your Organisation

In response to the Government's restrictions during the Covid 19 pandemic, Teaching Schools South West and partners are creating new platforms for teachers and school leaders to access training, networks and support.

Webinars are a key tool for delivering remote learning to meet the short to medium-term challenges; as well as positive, efficient and sustainable ways of working with schools and partners beyond the Covid 19 emergency.

Video production company Bitpod have led three training sessions on the Principles and Planning, Understanding the Platform and Production of webinars.

See the links below to view the three webinar training sessions, which will be followed up by drop-in clinics.
Session 1: Principles and Planning
Session 2: Understanding the Platform
Session 3: Production
