Phonics Leadership
Workshop 1 | Friday 8 January 2021 | 1130 to 1300 | Google Meet

This workshop is a repeat of the workshop in October and November and will explore the roles and responsibilities of being a Phonics Leader and also look into different aspects to support you in your role and links to the Ofsted Framework.

Suitable for new and experienced Phonics Leaders and also English Leaders who work alongside Phonics Leaders.

Reading for Pleasure: Building Readers for Life
Workshop 2 | Thursday 28 January 2021 | 1600 to 1730 | Google Meet | Run by Professor Teresa Cremin
This event only has a few spaces left, and we can also add people to our waiting list.

It is widely recognised that children who read for pleasure improve their life chances, not only academically, but also in relation to their well-being and relationships.

Research has shown however, that children in England read less often and do not enjoy reading as much as their counterparts in other countries.

Drawing on the Open University's research into reading for pleasure this evidence-informed webinar will offer practical ways forward to support the development of readers who not only can, but do choose to read and find enjoyment in the process.

It will explore:
  • The benefits and challenges of reading for pleasure
  • Ways to develop richer repertoires of children’s literature and other texts
  • Strategies for getting to know your children as readers EYFS-Year 6
  • An effective reading for pleasure pedagogy

Such a pedagogy includes the creation of relaxed ‘social reading environments’ in schools, where children and their teachers read together, both aloud and independently, and will discuss what they are reading and share recommendations informally.

Through sharing 'books in common' and something of their own journeys as readers, communities of engaged readers are built.

Please bring a brilliant children's book that you know and love.
This session will link to the Open University reading for pleasure website
Closing the Vocabulary Gap and Young Children's Language Development - PART TWO*

Love of Reading, Storytelling and the Importance of Sharing Stories
Workshop 4 | Friday 5 February 2021 | 1130 to 1300 | Google Meet

This workshop will explore the importance of building a reading community and will look at the journey of a reader and how we can ensure we guide children into wanting to be storytellers, rather than robotic readers.

We will share tips and strategies for you to take away.

Suitable for all school staff.

Phonics Subject Knowledge
Workshop 5 | Friday 12 February 2021 | 1130 to 1300

This workshop will look at the core fundamentals of Phonics that underpins all Systematic Synthetic Phonics programmes and the importance of each skill and how we can use these skills to accelerate children's progress.

We will explore the Department for Education's 'Challenge Checklist,' which links to the Ofsted Framework and will look at our potential next steps.  We will explore how we can ensure that we get all children reading and discuss strategies to take away to help close gaps in learning.

Suitable for all school staff.

Virtual Showcase
Thursday 4 March 2021 | 0900 to 1200 | Google Meet
FREE to access.

Some schools will be able to apply for funding of a maximum of £160 per school if they meet certain criteria, accessed through the self-referral data. Please note, this cannot be claimed if the school has previously claimed showcase money in previous years.

The showcase will look at all fundamentals of the Hub, the links to the Ofsted Framework and the next steps.
The morning also provides opportunity for CPD on all Hub aims and to watch some best practice films.
It is recommended that this is accessed by the Headteacher, SLT and Phonics Leader.

All participants will have the opportunity to share best practice in the teaching of Systematic Synthetic Phonics and will explore the core fundamentals of Phonics.

We will also look at the love of reading, how to develop this and the importance of early language and how to address the vocabulary gap.
The showcase will also provide some basic training on all the fundamentals of the Hub and how these match to the new Ofsted Framework, with opportunity to watch some best practice films. Research-based evidence will be referenced, along with practical ideas to take away and opportunity to complete a short reflection form on your own next steps.

Challenging Topics
Initial Online Meeting | Wednesday 9 December 2020 | 1615 to 1700 | A further online meeting in January.
Free to attend.

The Challenging Topics Work Group aims to raise students’ attainment by exploring mathematical topics that students find difficult, then collaboratively planning and trialling sequences of lessons to overcome their challenges.

“I think that it is so helpful and important to take time to talk to other professionals about Maths, learning from each other and gleaning new ideas. I really would like to do this again next year.” (Challenging Topics Work Group participant, Plymouth).

In the first meeting, participants in the workgroup will identify a topic that students in their schools find challenging.
Supported by the Work Group Lead, they will work through the year to combine their own experiences with research around student difficulties and will then collaboratively design and trial lesson sequences.

This Work Group offers an opportunity for teachers to develop professionally by meeting together, having space and time to plan collaboratively and share expertise across schools; as well as giving a structure to bring gathered ideas and experiences back to their own Departments.

The Code Maths Hub’s Challenging Topics Work Group will offer a mix of online and face-to-face meetings, as appropriate to the national and local situation.

The intention is to hold two further face-to-face meetings in March and April (dates TBC) at three venues across the region:
Newton Abbot, Plymouth and Central Cornwall and participants should choose one group to attend.

Key benefits:
  • Targeted at your Department’s needs
  • Research based Professional Development
  • Collaborative planning with expert support and challenge

Work Group Leads
Richard Perring |
Richard supports and trains Maths teachers nationally and was one of the authors of the NCETM’s Secondary Mastery PD Materials.
Jane Lawrence | Jane was Head of Maths at a school in Torquay and previously led the Exeter University Secondary Maths PGCE programme.

The Developing Teaching for Mastery Work Group
Initial Online Meeting | Wednesday 9 December 2020 | 1615 to 1700 | A further online meeting in January.
Free to attend.

The Developing Teaching for Mastery Work Group offers a funded opportunity for a Department to work closely with an expert Teaching for Mastery Specialist to design and implement a bespoke development plan using the principles of Teaching for Mastery.

The CODE Maths Hub works with a team of Teaching for Mastery Specialists (TfM) around the region.
These are practising teachers who have undergone at least two years' training to build their skills in working with Maths Departments.
When joining the Developing Teaching for Mastery Work Group, your Department will nominate two Teaching for Mastery Advocates.
These are teachers with the capacity to lead change in your Department and who will work closely with the TfM Specialist.

The Developing TfM Work Group is the first step in an ongoing process of working with the CODE Maths Hub and is the first of two years of funded development, which then continues through the ‘embedding’ and ‘sustaining’ phases as follows:

Year 1 (2020/2021) - The 'Developing Year'
Funding £2000 paid to your Department

Your Department nominates two teachers to become ‘Mastery Advocates.’
These Advocates work with a Teaching for Mastery Specialist.
The Advocates and Specialist work together to design and lead the PD Programme.
£2000 funding is offered to allow the Advocates a total of 10 days' cover to work individually and with the Specialist.

Year 2 (2021/2022) - The ‘Embedding Year'
Funding £1000 paid to your Department

Your Mastery Advocates continue to develop and implement the action plan with the TfM Specialist.
The intention is that the Specialist takes a step back in this year but is still able to visit and support where necessary.
£1000 is offered to allow the Advocates time to embed the action plan and work with the Specialist.
This year your Advocates also become a part of the ’Sustaining’ Work Group, which is described below.

Year 3 (2022 onwards) - The ’Sustaining Years’
All Advocates who have worked with a Specialist for two years are able to join the Sustaining Work Group.
This is a network of teachers, supported by the specialist who are able to work together, to share good practice and support and challenge each other in leading change with their own Department.

Key benefits:
  • Principled and research based Professional Development
  • Bespoke development programme designed with your Department
  • Long-term funded programme to allow time for implementation and impact

The Work Group Lead will be a Teaching for Mastery Specialist.

Simon Jack (Mounts Bay) | Claire Ollerenshaw (Liskeard) | Mat Smith (Penrice)| Beth Stivey (Newquay Tretherras) | Dr Nicola Trubridge (Launceston) | Darren White (Humphry Davey)

If you are interested in either of these opportunities, please contact Richard Perring:
