Different Routes into Teaching
You can find out here more information about different routes into teaching.
SCHOOL DIRECT
Like SCITTs, School Direct is a school-led route into initial teacher training (ITT) for graduates run by a partnership between a lead school, other schools and an accredited teacher training provider.
Training places are allocated to the lead school on behalf of the partnership, usually for one year.
The lead school has overall responsibility for requesting places from the Department for Education (DfE) and for ensuring that the criteria for School Direct are met.
There are two types of School Direct training places available:
1. School Direct (tuition fee) places - open to all graduates funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee.
Trainees may be eligible for a training bursary or scholarship.
2. School Direct (salaried) places - aimed mainly at graduates with three or more years’ work experience.
Trainees are employed as an unqualified teacher.
Both routes carry the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and some may lead to the award of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

SCITT | SCHOOL-CENTRED INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING
Like School Direct, SCITTs provide school-led training courses, which are managed and driven by partnerships of schools.
Trainees follow a programme that leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the qualification of a Post-Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE).
The PGCE element of the course is accredited by a university who provide up-to-date and relevant research to the course to enhance the practitioner-led training programme.

UNIVERSITY
The university route for teacher training provides a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for both prospective primary and secondary school teachers.
You apply to study with a specific training provider, and the majority of your study will be on the university campus.
You also gain classroom experience, and spend time teaching and being trained in at least two schools for a minimum of 24 weeks.
Universities also offer you the opportunity to train to teach through an undergraduate route allowing you to achieve a degree with QTS.
